Is honey vegan?

This debate is longstanding. Only around 20% of vegans consume honey, according to one poll by Healthy Happy Life, and there is a massive stigma for those who choose to do so.

At Nectar Bakes, we are animal-centred with our organic beekeeping! We reduce our product for the priority of the little bugs we home. Our sales seasons align with the bee seasons for this reason.

Our bakes are completely vegan. While we don’t skip on the honey-taste some vegans may miss, we also want to meet you in the middle. Help us see a world we can share with bees.

What vegan honey alternative do you use?

We use date syrup at Nectar Bakes. This is an ethically sourced, vegan alternative in our bakes. We have worked for over two decades to hone these sweet recipes without compromising on ethics, quality and taste.

Why is honey not vegan?

Have you ever seen bee movie? Some of the worst practices on bee farms used in that movie are horrifyingly true.

Many bee farms unfortunately harvest honey to the extent that bees suffer in the winter and are harmed in the process.

Our farm uses ethical practices to harvest excess honey on a seasonal basis, so as to minimise harm to the bees and always centre their wellness. The bakes were just a part of our founder’s passion for sweet pastries, as well as a way to bridge veganism and those curious about the plant-based lifestyle.

So, should I eat honey on a plant-based diet?

That is up to you! We won’t judge you either way, but we do believe people should have a choice and we promote a balanced lifestyle either way.

There are plenty of replacements out there, but we help our bees make honey in the best conditions so people don’t have to go cold-turkey on it.
